The Bunaken National Marine Park - North Sulawesi, Indonesia


Bunaken National Marine Park is located on Bunaken Island, North Sulawesi Province, Indonesia. It is situated close to other neighboring islands, Manado Tua, Siladen, Mantehage, Nain and Nain Kecil.

Bunaken Islan is acclaimed as one of the Indonesia’s most famous diving and snorkeling areas which attract travelers from all over the world and one of the top places in the world with regards to biodiversity. 

Geographically, Bunaken Island is included in Golden Triangle water area, a sea route that links the Philippine, Papua and Indonesian sea. 

The travelers can reach Bunaken by speedboat about 30 minutes from Manado Sea Port. Travelers can charter a private boat to Bunaken Island at the Manado Harbor (behind the Celebes Hotel). Alternatively, a public boat leaves daily except Sunday at 2-3 PM from the canal on the north side of Manado market and it returns to Manado from the jetty in Bunaken Village around 8-8.30 AM the next morning.

Bunaken National Park is famous as the most attractive tourism destination on Sulawesi Island. It represents a tropical water ecosystem that consists of mangrove ecosystems, sea grass beds, coral reefs and coastal/land ecosystem.

Diving on and around Bunaken is mostly wall diving and drift diving that sometimes includes several beautiful coral slopes. It has 12 diving spots where travelers can explore around 150 species of fishes and various kinds of coral reefs. Some fishes that live in this water park are gusumi horse fish (Hippocampus horse), white oci (Seriola rivoliana), yellow tail lolosi (Lutjanus karmira), whales, tuna, barracuda and turtles as well as dolphins. Bunaken also offers superb opportunities for photography as well as underwater videography.

 There are many kinds of hotels available one Bunaken Island. The local communities also provide rental of diving equipment along with diving instructors. Some of the instructors can speak English, Dutch, Frenc, and German. Travelers can also buy souvenirs at the Visitors Centre which sells handicrafts, t-shirts,  and general souvenirs.
