Desa Pengotan: A Tourism Village Destination in Bali

It is not a secret anymore if Bali is an island with a variety of attractions that can be visited. In addition to the luxuries of arts and culture, beautiful panoramic beaches and mountains are also available in Bali. As a destination most often targeted by local or foreign tourists, Bali seemed to never stop giving new nuances and unique attractions and certainly different from others. On of destinations where you can explore the wonderful of Balinese art and cultures as well as the beautiful nature is Desa Pengotan. It is a tourism village that represent an ancient Bali tradition, which is located about 50 km from the city of Denpasar and can be reached only 1.5 hours by car.

The community of Pengotan village is a native of Bali. Only selected persons have the right to govern the village customs. Residents from Pengotan Village has a quite unique home order. They embraced Jajar Wayang house order where the order of this house lined up like wayang from upstream to downstream. From these various customary structures, there are many unique cultures and rituals of the natives of Pengotan Village.

When we get around in this village, we will be escorted on a very straight road and ends at the Great Penataran Temple. In the vicinity, there are houses whose buildings resemble small fortresses. Then, we will find a house with a large yard that is occupied by a large family.

Pengotan Village has a symbol that is believed to be a god for he residents Pengotan, namely Barong Kepet, but the Barong cannot be seen carelessly. We can see it only when there is a ritual ceremony which is scheduled according to the Balinese calendar.

 Function of Traditional House in Desa Pengotan


This village is the ancestral home of Pengotan community. Each family has a pair of ancestral homes whose positions are facing each other which they call as Bale and Meten. Both houses have different functions. Bale House serves as a place to put Servings, while the Meten house serves as a kitchen. Both of them function while holding a religious and traditional event in Pengotan Village. So, indeed if we see this village is very quiet, because the residents prefer to make a house and live near their fields.


The village alone is unique and interesting, moreover with the ritual. There is one of the most unique and most anticipated rituals, Nganten Massal (mass wedding ceremony) that lasted more than 3 centuries ago! With escorted by relatives and other close relatives, one by one the couple enter the Pura Penataran Agung. On the side of this temple, these marriage couples march to follow the series of Nganten Massal ceremony.

The ceremony is performed twice a year. Typically, Nganten Massal ceremony performed in the fourth and tenth month as per Balinese Calendar. Surely this will be a very crowded ceremony due to the number of couples join this ceremony that can reach about 70 couples.  This procession is quite time consuming and the funds are quite a lot because each couple is required to cut at least 1 cow.  However, the villagers were always happy to organize this event as it representing their indigenous tradition.
